Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

The spaces inside the facial bones are defined as sinuses. In order to be healthy, the secretions produced in the sinuses must be discharged into the nose. In chronic sinusitis patients, the ducts that allow the secretions to be emptied are clogged. With endoscopic sinus surgery, narrowed or clogged nasal canals are emptied, thus creating a sufficiently wide area where breathing can take place easily and secretions can be discharged into the nose.

How is Endoscopic Sinus Surgery Performed?

Endoscopic sinus surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes an average of 1-2 hours. It is performed without any incisions and stitches with the help of a camera inserted through the nose.

A special balloon called a microshaver is used during the surgery. Tampons are not used in endoscopic sinus surgery.

After Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

There are some factors that should be considered after endoscopic sinus surgery. First of all, the medications recommended by the doctor should be taken regularly, dressings and controls should not be interrupted. It is expected that there will be a blockage in the nose for a day or two. The time to return to normal life after the operation is 1 day. In cases where it is necessary to put a tampon, they can return to their normal lives after a few dressings. Full recovery time is 2-6 weeks.

Behaviors such as blowing the nose and drawing tap water into the nose should be avoided for a long time. It should be preferred to use sprays recommended by the doctor to clean the nose.

Sinuses are very susceptible to heat exposure. For this reason, a scarf must be worn to cover the mouth and nose, especially in cold weather.

Physician Selection for Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

Due to their location, the sinuses are close to important structures such as the eye, the tear duct, the brain, the cerebral cortex, and the vessels that carry blood to the brain. For this reason, endoscopic sinus surgery is a sensitive procedure and the doctor who will perform the surgery should have received special training and be experienced in this regard.
